Once An Englishman Always An Englishman When It Comes To Food

Hi folks,

Everything is laid out for my English Breakfast

Everything is laid out for my English breakfast

Born and raised in Bristol, England, I’ve now been in the USA for over 30 years, and I love living here, but I still enjoy many English things, especially certain foods. Nostalgia for one’s youth plays a role in our gustatory preferences. I am very suspicious of so-called health food, with special reference to the latest fad, be it low fat milk or tofu burgers. Just recovering from a bonk-induced vertigo accompanied by what I can only describe as seasickness, I was suddenly struck by an overwhelming desire for food. And what did I head for ASAP, sausages, eggs, baked beans, fried tomatoes and toast (in a word, English breakfast), and then, of course, a nice hot cup of tea. What else could be better to get me on the road to recovery?

Here's my breakfast, which I'm having at 2:42 in the afternoon. Never a bad time for English Breakfast.

Here is my English breakfast, ready to consume with relish (not American relish, I mean enjoyment). I’ve lived in a number of different countries, and savored foods from Sweden to Japan. The world is much too small for countries with respect to xenophobia, but not for the diversity of life-styles, food and art that brings such a wealth of experiences into our lives. And, let’s face it, life is really more about experiences than accumulating a bunch of stuff. It is remarkable how different foods can be, but my all time favorite, putting nostalgia aside, is Indian food. I don’t know why, it just is. Mediterranean food comes a very close second, though I have found delicacies to enjoy in every culture. Take for instance those little food vans in Amsterdam, with a range of fish and eels. Yum! Yum! And when you are really hungry, nothing can really beat an American Hamburger. Well, time to eat my breakfast.

Damn that was good!

Damn that was good!

Now, that was brilliant.

Time for tea!

Further information and insights, take a look at the invited blog post on the subject by my sister and Editor, Marian.

Good night Stacey!
