It’s Not About The Marathon Finisher Medal, But The Training Definitely Improved Calf Claudication

As I hobbled over the finish line,

I Tried To Decline The Marathon Finisher Medal

Wonderful campsite on Hermit Island. The day after the race, smiling while sitting! Standing is painful. Photo by Deb.

But They Insisted!

They gave me the medal for coming in last.

Literally last!

My most painful marathon finisher medal, yet, all in my feet. Calf claudication vanished at about three miles, so why the foot pain? I have my hypotheses.

Deb had a great first marathon.

I keep telling her she’s a natural athlete!

Race Analysis:

My run fell apart in the second half of the race.

Foot pain kicked in with a vengeance, while calf claudication had vanished by three miles or so.

aging marathon medal

Foot bruising during the last five miles. No adverse effects a few days later. Back in Ironman training when we get back.

Reason: Undertrained for the distance, in part due to excessive travel prior to the race.

Conclusions:

(1) Most importantly, Deb had a great first marathon, with a little touch of ITBS!

(2) At least I finished, somewhat to my surprise. I had already decided that I needed to break six hours to continue with my 2018 Cozumel Ironman plans.

(3) Trying to transfer Cozumel Ironman registration from 2018 to 2019. You never know your luck.

(4) Marathon training definitely improved my right calf claudication.

Never give up.

Wishing you happy trails and happy feet,
